The
restaurant started life as old wooden cottage called
"the View".
Lonnie and Albert Willis, longtime residents of St. John and owners of the Fish
Trap Restaurant, bought the property right after Hurricane Marilyn in 1995.
Together with their son, Aaron and architect Pam Killiany, they worked on the
building for two years with the goal of making it into a first class restaurant.
Albert & Aaron designed the kitchen and the building. Local stonework artisans,
Martin Jean and Felix Abraham, built the stone walls and staircase, and Mitchell
Bedminster, the Willis' longtime employee at the Raintree Court, oversaw the
entire project.
The building was finished at the very end of 1998 and the Stone Terrace
Restaurant opened for business. The building sports a graceful stone staircase
leading to the "terrace" area which houses the open-air canopied outdoor bar
where patrons can comfortably drink as well as dine. Dinner seating is along a
covered archway and an awning-covered side terrace, both overlooking the water.
Rose sand-colored tiled floors and a high cypress ceiling enclose the inside
air-conditioned dining space, with 4 arched doorways looking out at the water.
Original paintings by Elaine Estern of
Coconut Coast Studios adorn the walls of
the inside space. |
